Jeremy Vine interrupted his Channel 5 show to discuss the latest developments in the investigation into the death of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, as Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice revealed he had received a call from the Chief Constable after news broke.
Richard Tice Receives Call from Chief Constable
Opening the discussion, Jeremy reflected on how much the investigation had changed since the pair last spoke. He said: "We spoke on Friday. We'd only knew about Ann's death at that point, but, of course, we now know much more, Richard. Your thoughts..."
Tice replied: "So, Jeremy, yes, I took a call from the Chief Constable early Friday afternoon after we'd spoken in the morning. And that was a devastating phone call to confirm they were holding a press conference. And in a sense, everything then has cascaded ever since. We've learnt of the horrors of Ann's death, the investigation into possible murder, and everything beyond yesterday."
Counter Terrorism Police Take Over Investigation
His comments come after Counter Terrorism Policing South East confirmed it has taken over the investigation into Widdecombe's death after officers uncovered "new information and evidence".
The former Conservative MP was found with serious injuries at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday after police believe she was attacked at around 12.30pm the previous day. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the 78-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 28-year-old man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, who was initially arrested on suspicion of murder, has since been re-arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
Police Pursue Multiple Lines of Enquiry
In a statement, Counter Terrorism Policing South East said: "New information and evidence has come to light during what has been a dynamic and complex investigation and as a result, Counter Terrorism Policing South East is now leading the investigation."
Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing Laurence Taylor said detectives were pursuing "multiple lines of enquiry" to establish the motivation behind the attack, while renewing an appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
Police are continuing to urge anyone with information, images or footage that could assist the investigation to report it via the Major Incident Public Portal or by contacting Devon and Cornwall Police on 101. Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
