Jamie Varley, the man convicted of murdering and sexually abusing 13-month-old Preston Davey, spent his first night at HMP Wakefield — known as 'Monster Mansion' — sobbing in his cell as fellow inmates banged on bars and warned they would make him pay, according to prison insiders.
Inmates Give 'Traditional Welcome'
Fuming prisoners are said to have given Varley a 'traditional prisoners welcome', shouting threats that he is on borrowed time for the vile abuse he inflicted on the toddler. The horror threats followed Varley as he entered the Category A prison in West Yorkshire immediately after his sentencing at Preston Crown Court last week.
Varley, 37, was handed a whole life order for the horrific abuse of his adopted son. After an eight-week trial, he was found guilty of murder, sexual assault, and a raft of other child sex offences. The reality of his new life seemed to hit him as he spent his first night sobbing in his cell, insiders say.
Insider Reveals Details
“It was quite the hit home for how the rest of his life will be,” a source revealed exclusively to the Daily Star. “Varley was in for a rude awakening if he thought he would be getting an easy ride. He is arguably one of Britain's most hated men right now, and that stands in the prison too.”
“There's a bounty on his head, everyone wants to be the one to hurt him first, and he was made very aware of that as he entered the prison. The other prisoners knew he was coming and they waited for him. They want him scared and they want to make his time inside as awful as they can — and now he knows he has a lot of time inside to serve. He is never getting out, there is no way out of this hell for him.”
Segregation and Suicide Watch
Varley is believed to currently be in segregation, meaning he will spend the majority of his time in his cell alone, with guards monitoring him for safety. “In time he will be allowed to move about a bit more, but any time he does leave his cell it is likely he will be flanked by guards, they have a duty of care to him,” the insider continued.
“He was welcomed last night by loud banging and shouting as fellow prisoners who anticipated his arrival when they learnt of a prison van arriving to drop off newbies. He was whispering to himself and spent the whole night just sobbing in his cell. He must be thinking that an attack is inevitable, it is just a case of when.”
Mental Health Assessment
Mental health experts are also expected to assess Varley as he is on 24-hour suicide watch. “High profile prisoners are often placed on this as a matter of protocol,” the source said. “But in this case it is probably called for and a real possibility. What has he got to live for?”
HMP Wakefield is one of Britain's most notorious prisons, housing between 630 and 750 high-risk offenders, most serving long-term or life sentences. Notable inmates have included Harold Shipman, Levi Bellfield, Ian Huntley, and Charles Bronson.
Partner's Location Unknown
The current location of Varley's partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, is unknown, but insiders claim he is likely to be either at HMP Manchester (Strangeways) or HMP Full Sutton. Varley's case has drawn widespread outrage, and the threats from inmates underscore the peril he faces inside.
