A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a shooting in Toxteth earlier this month. The arrest was made on June 23, nearly three weeks after the incident.
Shooting Details
Armed police responded to reports of a shooting at the corner of Carlingford Close and Selborne Street in Toxteth shortly after 8:40 PM on Wednesday, June 3. Officers found a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his arm. The victim had been shot outside the African Caribbean Council Community Centre on Amberley Street before fleeing and collapsing on the corner of Selborne Street.
The victim was taken to hospital and has since been discharged. Merseyside Police confirmed the teenager is not cooperating with the investigation. Detectives believe the gunman was dressed in black and riding an electric bike at the time of the shooting.
Arrest and Investigation
On the morning of June 23, Merseyside Police arrested a 16-year-old boy from Liverpool on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody and will be questioned by detectives. Detective Inspector Chris Clark stated: “Although we have made an initial arrest, the investigation into the shooting on Amberley Street in Toxteth is ongoing and this man will be questioned as part of our enquiries.”
Police have increased patrols in the area and are appealing for witnesses. Clark added: “We have increased the number of officers in the local area and are keen to speak with anyone who was on Amberley Street on the evening of 3 June and saw or heard anything suspicious but has not yet come forward.”
Community Response
Residents reported hearing a single loud bang, initially mistaken for a firework. A neighbour told the Liverpool Echo: “I heard a bang, it was like a firework and just one, then the police came racing up and down the street, there were loads of them. There was a lad on the door by the lamppost. I think his mum arrived and she just broke down.”
The shooting occurred less than three weeks before a separate incident on June 19 at Bala B's Soul Kitchen on Lodge Lane, where a man was chased into a café and shot from behind. No arrests have been made in that case.
