Two Men Die in Rescue Attempt at Seaton Carew Beach
A father-of-three, Wayne Taylor, and a passerby, Ian Pascoe, 62, drowned on Sunday afternoon while attempting to rescue Taylor's two children from the sea at Seaton Carew beach, near Hartlepool, County Durham. The children, a nine-year-old boy and his younger sister, survived the ordeal.
The RNLI responded to the incident at approximately 3:45 p.m. and recovered the bodies of both men. Taylor and Pascoe had entered the water together after Pascoe, who was walking with his wife and granddaughter, saw the children in distress.
Families Pay Tribute to the Heroes
Ian Pascoe's son, Dan, 30, paid tribute to his father, describing him as someone who always did the right thing. 'He was the kind of person who has always done the right thing. He stood up for what he thought was right and took action when other people might have stood by and watched,' Dan said.
Pascoe had recently returned from working in Saudi Arabia to spend more time with his family. According to Dan, his father handed his phone to his wife, saying, 'Here, hold this for me, I will be back in a bit,' before entering the water. Dan added, 'He would never witness, he would always act. And he went in to try and save them. I know that he would do it 10 times over if he thought that he was going to save a child's life.'
Water Safety Campaign Gains Support
Both families have expressed support for the Mirror's 'Save Lives For Sam' water safety campaign, which aims to address the UK's drowning crisis. The campaign calls for compulsory water safety lessons in schools, better life-saving equipment at high-risk waterways, the introduction of Sam's Law, and a dedicated Minister for Water Safety.
A member of Wayne Taylor's family criticized social media attacks on the children's mother, stating, 'The mum did nothing wrong, and she does not deserve this criticism. She needs to be able to grieve with her children without this in their lives.'
Community Mourns the Loss
Hartlepool MP Jonathan Brash described the incident as 'a heartbreaking tragedy,' adding, 'Two men went into the sea to help children in difficulty at Seaton Carew. Those children were saved. The two men who went to help did not come home.'
Jess Cole, cousin of 14-year-old Matthew Sherrington who drowned in July 2021, expressed her sorrow, saying, 'My heart goes out to the two men who sadly lost their lives at Seaton Carew.' Another resident commented, 'RIP to the two heroes that saved these kids' lives, but sadly lost their own.'
Eyewitness Keith Smith, 74, described the large rescue operation, with hundreds watching from the seafront. Davey Short, who also entered the water to help bring the children to safety, recounted how the children's mother was hysterical and unable to swim.
