Zara's trendy Flowing Wide Leg Trousers, priced at £26, have been labeled 'death pants' after a series of accidents sent shoppers to hospital. The ultra-wide, floor-skimming polyester trousers have sparked a global trend of injuries, with TikTok and Instagram users sharing clips of falls under hashtags like #ZaraDeathTrousers and #DeadlyZaraPants.
How the Trousers Cause Accidents
The danger lies in the width of the lightweight fabric, which can wrap around the opposite foot while walking, effectively trapping the wearer's feet. The risk increases with sandals, open-toe shoes, or trainers, as the material can slide under footwear and lock feet together mid-step, according to CBC. Fashion design directors warn the excess material is particularly hazardous on stairs, escalators, and uneven pavements.
Even those who have had the trousers professionally hemmed report stumbling because the width remains dramatic, as noted by Firstpost. What began as jokes has evolved into real injury clips, with some videos filmed from hospital waiting rooms.
Injuries Reported
Alleged injuries include deep facial cuts, split lips, lost toenails, grazed knees, bruised ankles, and sprains. More severe cases involve fractures such as broken wrists, elbows, and knees. A Facebook user commented: 'I thought this was only me. I went a**e over t*t on holiday. Trifecta of hem, toes and sandal edge. Landed on my face.' Another wrote: 'I thought it was only me! Told my daughter and she’s done it too! No more wide leg pants with Docs or Birks!'
A YouTube user added: 'LOL I have these pants!! I trip all the time in them only wear them at home but the stairs are life or death.' The Daily Star has contacted Zara for comment.
