A Tesco store in Glasgow was evacuated after a fire broke out in its underground car park, sparking “total panic” among shoppers.
Blaze reported at Maryhill Road store
The fire was reported at the supermarket on Maryhill Road at around 4.21pm on Friday, with thick black smoke seen pouring from the car park entrance, reports Glasgow Live. The fire involved a car believed to be electric, while witnesses said staff and customers were evacuated as firefighters tackled the blaze.
Two Scottish Fire and Rescue Service appliances were sent to the scene, with police also in attendance and the car park cordoned off.
Witness describes 'total panic'
One local resident described the scene as “total panic” as the evacuation unfolded. Ryan, 26, an energy consultant who lives opposite the store, told Glasgow Live: “I was just coming home on the bus and I saw the smoke which looked like it was coming out the roof of the Tesco store.
“Then when I rounded the corner to get to my flat I saw it was a car on fire. It looks like an electric car, although I’ve no idea how it started.
“The staff and customers were being evacuated and it was total panic. They are just standing outside now waiting for the firefighters to finish.”
Fire service response
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 4.21pm to reports of a car on fire at the Tesco supermarket on Maryhill Road in Glasgow. We mobilised two appliances and are still at the scene.”
