Four England players, including Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, are at risk of suspension for the World Cup semi-final if they receive a yellow card in the quarter-final against Norway. The Three Lions face Norway on Saturday with a place in the last four at stake, but any booking for these four stars would rule them out of the next match.
Yellow Card Accumulation Threat
According to FIFA rules, players who accumulate two yellow cards by the end of the quarter-finals are suspended for one match. Bellingham and Rice each received one booking in earlier group-stage games: Bellingham against Mexico and Rice against DR Congo. Nico O'Reilly and Marc Guehi also picked up yellow cards during England's 1-0 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, where they played over 40 minutes with 10 men.
If any of these four players is cautioned against Norway, they would miss the semi-final should England advance. The yellow card tally resets after the quarter-finals, so no player risks suspension for the final due to accumulation.
England's Quarter-Final Clash
England reached the quarter-finals after a hard-fought victory over Mexico, regarded as one of the best results in the nation's World Cup history. Their reward is a meeting with Norway, who have never before reached the final eight of the tournament. Norway last qualified for the World Cup in 1998 and are on a historic run, led by Erling Haaland, who has scored seven goals so far—only Lionel Messi has more this summer.
England manager Thomas Tuchel faces a selection headache if any of the four key players are suspended. Bellingham and Rice have been instrumental in midfield, while O'Reilly and Guehi have featured heavily in defence. A victory over Norway would send England to just their second World Cup semi-final since 1990.
Potential Semi-Final Opponents
Should England beat Norway, their most likely semi-final opponent is Argentina, who face Switzerland in the quarter-finals. Other last-eight clashes include France vs Morocco and Spain vs Belgium on the opposite side of the bracket. The yellow card wipe after the quarter-finals means any suspended player would be available for the final if England progresses.
