Driver killed, child critical after train-car crash at level crossing

A driver has died and a child is in a critical condition following a collision between a train and a car at a level crossing in Hoghton, Lancashire, on the morning of 25 June 2026.

Emergency response

Emergency services were called to Station Road, Hoghton, at approximately 8:50am after reports of the crash. Fire crews, ambulance teams, and officers from British Transport Police (BTP) and South Ribble Police attended the scene.

A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We responded to an incident in the Hoghton area of Lancashire after reports of a collision between a train and a car at 8.50am today (25 June). Several clinical teams attended the scene, including our hazardous area response team and two air ambulances."

Casualties

Two people were in the car at the time of the collision. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The other occupant, a child, sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Alder Hey Children's Hospital for emergency treatment.

A BTP spokesperson confirmed: "Two people were in the car and sadly one was pronounced dead the scene, the other is being taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries." No passengers on the train required medical attention.

Investigation and appeal

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the collision. Police have urged drivers to avoid the area. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to text 61016 with reference 152 of 25 June.
