Controlled explosion after historic ordnance found in Bury

A controlled explosion is to take place in Bury tonight after a historic unexploded military device was found in a garden.

The item was uncovered at an address on Lime Avenue in Whitefield shortly before 5pm this evening (Saturday, August 22). A cordon was put in place, with Lime Avenue and neighbouring Birch Avenue closed, and residents were asked to remain indoors while it was assessed.

EOD experts called to scene

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts attended the scene to examine the device. It is believed to be 'an historic unexploded ordnance,' Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said in a statement issued tonight.
