Jean-Philippe Mateta is attempting to render the final year of his Crystal Palace contract invalid and has taken his fight to FIFA. The extraordinary episode has seen the Frenchman try to get out of the final 10 months of his contract at Selhurst Park, which will expire next June.
Contract dispute and tribunal
Mateta signed for the Eagles in 2021 on an 18-month loan from German side Mainz. The striker then penned a four-and-half year contract when joining permanently in January 2022, but that deal also included the option of an extra 12 months. Palace activated that option in 2024, taking Mateta through until the end of the season.
However, the Eagles star, who has pushed for the exit door in the past, believes the final year of his contract should be void. The BBC reports that Mateta's case was heard by an independent tribunal under the Premier League's rules, but he is now taking his fight even further as he involves FIFA.
Potential free agency and career highlights
If Mateta is successful with his contract argument then it would likely make the forward a free agent before the expiry of his Palace deal next year. The Frenchman has enjoyed notable success during his time at Selhurst Park. He's scored 67 times for the south Londoners and played a key role in the club's most successful period. He helped Palace lift the FA Cup in 2025 and was then present for their Community Shield win. Last year he also helped the Eagles win the Europa Conference League.
Back in January he did push for a move away and was close to joining AC Milan, but the switch to Italy was curtailed due to an issue with Mateta's knee. Aston Villa, potentially in the market for a striker, are reportedly keen on the Frenchman.
Palace exodus and new manager
Palace have seen an exodus of several of their leading lights over the past 12 months. This time last year Eberechi Eze secured his move away, joining Arsenal. Then in the January Marc Guehi, who had made it known he wouldn't sign a new deal, headed to Manchester City.
Oliver Glasner has also left, taking over at Nottingham Forest, with Palace now led by Pierre Sage. He moved to Selhurst Park off the back of impressing at Lens. His tenure began with a 2-0 defeat at Everton on Saturday afternoon.
