A tree collapse at an outdoor activity centre in Surrey has left several children injured, with one child airlifted to a London hospital. The incident occurred at approximately 1:40pm on Monday at PGL Marchants Hill in Tilford Road, Hindhead.
Emergency Response and Casualties
South Central Ambulance Service dispatched multiple ambulance crews, supported by police, fire services, and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. One child suffered a serious leg injury and was airlifted to a London hospital. Six other children were taken to Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford with less severe injuries. A further eleven people were assessed and treated at the scene before being discharged.
Statements from Officials and PGL
A spokesperson for PGL said: "A number of children were injured and are receiving medical treatment as required. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. The safety and wellbeing of the children, their teachers and our colleagues is our absolute priority." The statement added that PGL is "committed to supporting everyone affected" and working closely with the schools involved and emergency services to keep families informed.
Farnham and Bordon MP Gregory Stafford confirmed awareness of the "serious accident," noting "a number of injuries" but no fatalities. He stated: "My thoughts are with the children involved, their families, and all those affected. I am grateful for the swift and professional response of our emergency services."
Background on PGL Marchants Hill
PGL Marchants Hill offers activities such as climbing, zip-lining, and canoeing, and is a popular destination for school trips. In 2023, the centre was fined £1 million after two children sustained "significant injuries" when their fingers were trapped between doors. The prosecution was brought by Waverley Borough Council against PGL Travel Limited.
