Two investigations are underway after the death of Callum Kerr, a bare knuckle boxer from Warrington, who was restrained by passengers and crew on a Jet2 flight from Larnaca, Cyprus, to Manchester. The flight landed early on Monday morning, and Kerr was pronounced dead in hospital on the afternoon of 23 June 2026.
Incident Details
Greater Manchester police reported that at around 2:25 am on Monday, officers were called to reports of a man behaving aggressively towards passengers and crew. During the incident, another passenger and a cabin crew member were assaulted. Officers boarded the aircraft upon arrival and found Kerr being restrained at the rear of the plane.
Police handcuffed Kerr but did not arrest him. According to GMP, officers quickly identified he was unresponsive, provided first aid, and began CPR. He was taken to hospital by paramedics but died later that day.
Family Tribute and Background
Kerr's family paid tribute, describing him as a family man, father to three young children, a lover of sport, and with a heart of gold. He was a bare knuckle boxer from Warrington.
Investigations
Because Kerr died after contact with police, the case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The IOPC will independently investigate the actions of GMP officers. Ch Supt Mike Allen stated that detectives are investigating to understand the full circumstances, noting that passengers and aircrew worked to detain the man.
The IOPC confirmed that the officers involved are being treated as witnesses and are not suspected of wrongdoing. Their investigation will focus on police actions, while a separate GMP investigation will consider the actions of the public involved. Jet2 declined to comment.
