Brooke George, a 23-year-old British TikTok influencer, is being held in Dubai's Bur Dubai prison on murder charges and could face execution by firing squad if convicted. She is accused of fatally stabbing a 26-year-old British man she met online, but her family claims she acted in self-defence.
Background and Arrest
George, a former John Lewis employee from Gravesend, Kent, travelled to Dubai after connecting with the man on Facebook, who allegedly arranged a photoshoot for her. She described her first visit as “the time of my life.” During a second trip, a confrontation erupted at a flat following an evening at Caffreys Bar in Jumeirah Village. George says she was assaulted and grabbed a kitchen knife in self-defence. She attempted to flee the country with help from friends but was arrested on June 22 at Dubai International Airport.
Allegations of Mistreatment
Following her arrest, George alleges she was denied a lawyer and forced to strip naked in front of male officers, with no female officers present. She described the experience as “deeply humiliating and distressing,” breaking down in tears when recounting it to her family. Her mother, Thereza, said in a statement via Detained in Dubai: “As Brooke's mother, I am deeply concerned for her welfare. The daughter I spoke to that night was utterly terrified. I firmly believe she was desperately trying to get home and away from whatever had happened to her.”
Calls for Fair Treatment
Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, is calling on authorities to treat the case as a domestic abuse matter and grant George bail pending investigation. She said: “Authorities must treat her as a domestic violence survivor while they investigate. We will be working to ensure that [George's] rights are protected, that she receives a fair trial, and that the circumstances leading to this tragedy are fully and impartially examined.” Stirling noted an increase in reports of women being lured to Dubai under false pretences for exploitation, including trafficking. She added: “We are calling for Brooke to be released on bail pending the outcome of the investigation. The UAE has a well documented history of criminalising and revictimizing women who report violence.”
International Concerns
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has been contacted for comment. George's case has drawn attention to the risks faced by women travelling to Dubai, with previous cases involving Irish national Tori Towey and others who were detained after reporting abuse. If convicted of murder, George could face the death penalty by firing squad.
