A seven-year-old boy who was injured in a beach tragedy that claimed the lives of his mother and sister has died in hospital, his family has confirmed.
Musa Ahmed had been fighting for his life since he was pulled from the water after six members of the same family got into difficulty off the Essex coast on Tuesday, July 22.
Details of the incident
The youngster was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital following the incident, while his mother, Shelina Rahman, 41, and his 15-year-old sister, Sameeha, were pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Musa's family confirmed he had died on Tuesday evening. They said he passed away "in a state of ease and peace" at the Royal London Hospital.
Tribute to hospital staff
The family also paid tribute to the staff who cared for Musa during his final days, thanking doctors and nurses in the hospital's intensive care unit for the "outstanding care and dignity" they showed him.
The family, from Ilford in east London, had travelled to West Mersea near Colchester for a day trip when the tragedy unfolded. Emergency services were called at around 5.35pm after reports that several people had got into difficulty in the water.
Ongoing inquiries
Three other relatives who were rescued from the sea were taken to hospital by ambulance. Essex Police previously said they were recovering from their injuries. Police inquiries into the circumstances of the incident remain ongoing.
