Woman Died After Setting Herself on Fire, Inquest Hears

An inquest has opened into the death of a young woman who suffered severe burns. Preston Coroners' Court heard this week that 22-year-old Shawgar Rasul Hama set herself on fire.

The inquest was opened and adjourned on Thursday, June 11. Miss Hama died at Wythenshawe Hospital in Greater Manchester on May 23, 2026. The 22-year-old, from Blackburn, had been taken to the hospital, which has a specialist burns unit, after suffering severe burns.

The court heard Miss Hama was born in Iraq in 2003, according to reports from Lancs Live.

Area Coroner Kate Bisset said during the brief hearing: 'This lady died as a consequence of burns having set herself on fire.'

The court heard that Miss Hama's body was identified using her hospital wristband by PC Liz Davies. She normally lived in Greenhurst Close in Blackburn.

A final inquest will be held on October 2 at Accrington Town Hall before Ms Bisset.
