A 22-year-old deckhand from North Uist has died after falling from a boat in Scapa Flow, Orkney. Shaun Shepherd, who was working for Inverlussa, died on July 23 following the incident.
Police Scotland said they were called to Stromness pier at around 2.50pm on Thursday, July 23, 2026, after a report that a man had fallen from a boat. Emergency services attended, and the 22-year-old was pronounced dead a short time later.
Inverlussa: 'We are devastated by his death'
In a statement, Shaun's employer Inverlussa said: “At the end of last week, one of our crewmen died in a tragic accident in Orkney. We are devastated by his death, and no words can adequately express the sadness we are feeling.”
The company added: “He was an exceptional deckhand whose kindness, dedication and strength of character touched everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him. He was one of our very best: dependable, hardworking and always willing to take the time to help others. He was not only a deeply respected colleague but also a true friend to so many within the Inverlussa family.”
“His loss is being felt profoundly, and he will be missed every day. Our deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones as they face this sudden loss. We are also providing support to those who were on board and to colleagues across the company. The relevant authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident, and we are cooperating fully with their investigation. For this reason, we will not be issuing any further comments at this time.”
Family and friends pay tribute
Shaun's sister Lauren announced his death on social media, writing: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our dear son and brother, Shaun, who suddenly passed away on July 23. As a family, we would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support, kind words and sympathy during this very sad time.”
North Uist Free Church also expressed condolences, saying: “Our hearts go out to the Shepherd family at this devastating time.”
Dozens of friends paid tribute online. Mary-Alex Kirkpatrick wrote: “Such a heartbreak for you all. My prayers are for you all. Shaun, you are with Father God now and surrounded by indescribable love.” Mac Macfarlane said: “I miss him loads, I’m absolutely gutted. He was like a brother. Thinking of all the family. Fly high brother, one in a million.” Murdo MacKinnon added: “So sorry to hear such sad news. Condolences to the family. Thinking of you all at this sad time.” Steph Gordon commented: “Absolutely heartbreaking. I’m so sorry for your devastating loss. You are all in my thoughts, sending lots of love and light to you all.”
Police confirm death is not being treated as suspicious
Inspector David Hall of Police Scotland said: “Around 2.50pm on Thursday, July 23, 2026, we were called to Stromness pier after a report that a man had fallen from a boat. Emergency services attended, and the 22-year-old man was pronounced dead a short time later. Inquiries are ongoing, and the death is not being treated as suspicious.”
An investigation into Shaun's death is ongoing, with no suspicious circumstances reported.
