Police in New York State are investigating the death of a one-year-old girl as a homicide, after she succumbed to injuries consistent with severe trauma.
A Mother's Tragic Discovery
On August 1, 2025, Elisha Hill dropped her daughter, Zaniyla, at a friend's home in Albany while she went to work. Later that day, she received a distressing call stating her baby was acting 'out of character'. The Watervliet Police Department reported that the child was found on her back and making 'long spit bubbles'.
Ms Hill rushed back from her job and discovered Zaniyla was unresponsive. The toddler was immediately taken to Samaritan Hospital and later transferred to Albany Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, Zaniyla passed away on August 6, 2025, just one day after celebrating her first birthday on August 5 while in critical care.
Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death
A subsequent autopsy determined the cause of death was a lack of oxygen to the brain caused by bleeding inside her skull. Investigators believe the injuries occurred on August 1, but authorities have stated that 'the exact time and location of the trauma could not be pinpointed'.
The case is now being treated as a homicide. A multi-agency investigation is underway involving the Watervliet Police Department, Troy Police Department, and New York State Police Troop G BCI.
Family's Anguish and Plea for Justice
In a bid for leads, New York's Crime Stoppers has offered a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Zaniyla's mother, Elisha Hill, reacted to this appeal on social media, writing 'Cash reward?? Do ya job.' She has publicly demanded justice for her daughter.
The child's father, Teshawn Conley, told local media he is consumed by grief and a need for answers. 'That eats me every minute,' he said. 'Every second. If I wasn't there, I could at least get justice. At least. And I'm not going to stop until I do.'
The family's obituary remembered Zaniyla, affectionately known as 'Sugar Momma' and 'Baby Z', as a joyful child who loved music and swimming. 'Though her time here was brief, the joy, light, and love she shared will forever shine in the hearts of those who knew her,' it read.
Police continue their investigation and urge anyone with information to come forward.
