Man Charged Over Replica Mosque on Northern Ireland Bonfire
Man Charged Over Mosque Replica on NI Bonfire

A 56-year-old man has been charged with incitement to hatred after a replica of a mosque was placed on a loyalist bonfire in Moygashel, Northern Ireland. The bonfire was lit a day early on Thursday, July 10, to prevent police from removing the offensive display.

Details of the Incident

The replica mosque was placed on top of the pyre alongside signs reading "Secure our borders" and "End the threat of radical Islam." The bonfire was scheduled for the Eleventh night, a traditional loyalist celebration on July 11, but was set alight a day early as police arrived to remove the material.

Chief Superintendent Norman Haslett of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated: "Had the bonfire not been lit police would have secured the site and removed the offending material and seized it as evidence." He described the operation to remove the hate display as 'complex' due to the early ignition.

Legal Action

The 56-year-old man was charged with incitement to hatred and is due to appear before Dungannon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, July 10. The PSNI confirmed that investigations into the hate-motivated crime are ongoing. Chief Superintendent Haslett added: "Hate crime has no place in our society and will not be tolerated."

This is not the first controversy surrounding the Moygashel bonfire. Last year, effigies of migrants in a boat were burned on the same pyre, drawing widespread condemnation.

Broader Context

The Eleventh night bonfires are a traditional part of loyalist culture in Northern Ireland, but they have often sparked controversy when they include offensive or sectarian symbols. The PSNI has faced criticism for its handling of such displays in the past, but this year's proactive policing operation aimed to remove the material before it could be burned.
