Police were called to Fistral Beach in Newquay at approximately 9.45pm on Sunday, July 26, following reports that two people had been pulled from the water. Despite efforts from Coastguard teams, RNLI lifeboats and a helicopter, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s were pronounced dead at the scene.
Devon and Cornwall Police have since confirmed that the two individuals were a father and daughter, both from Doncaster. The force stated that their families have been notified and that their thoughts remain with them during this difficult time.
Emergency response
Coastguard rescue teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes were among those who attended the incident, alongside Newquay RNLI lifeboats and an HM Coastguard helicopter. The South Western Ambulance Service had first alerted police.
Investigation and appeal
A file will be prepared for HM Coroner. Police have thanked all emergency service personnel and members of the public who assisted.
It is believed the woman entered the water carrying a handbag described as orange or peach in colour with a shoulder strap. The leather-style bag, measuring approximately 30cm by 30cm, is thought to contain personal items of considerable sentimental value. Police say the family would take great comfort in being reunited with these belongings.
