A school minibus driver has been arrested after failing a roadside drugs test while on his way to collect children from a school in Southport. Merseyside Police stopped the vehicle on Sefton Street at around 2.40pm on Monday, September 8, after it was seen being driven at speed in a 20mph zone.
The 50-year-old driver, from the Southport area, was the only person on the minibus at the time. Officers administered a roadside drug test, which he failed, leading to his arrest on suspicion of driving with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the legal limit.
Merseyside Police's roads policing unit confirmed on social media that the bus was en route to pick up children from a school. The driver was taken into custody and later released under investigation.
Roads policing inspector Simon Wilson warned of the dangers of drug driving, stating: 'Anyone who gets in the driver’s seat after taking illicit or even prescription medication that affects their capacity is taking a huge risk. Drug driving is a selfish act that can cause devastation to families.'
