Man killed and baby girl critically hurt in A34 crash

A man has died and a one-year-old girl is fighting for her life after a Mercedes van crashed into their broken-down car on the A34 in Hampshire.

The collision happened on the southbound carriageway of the A34 in Sutton Scotney at 3.13pm on October 23. The driver of the stationary Citroën Picasso, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Driver arrested and bailed

The van driver, aged 33, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. He has been bailed while investigations continue.

Detective Sergeant Oliver Cahill-Smith, of the Joint Operations Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the victims of this collision, one who has sadly died and another who is in a critical condition in hospital, and their loved ones at this extremely difficult time."

Appeal for witnesses and dash-cam footage

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the Citroën Picasso broken down before the collision, or who witnessed the crash involving a Mercedes Sprinter van, to come forward.

Drivers travelling on the A34 southbound between Upper Bullington and Worthy Down between 3pm and 3.20pm who may have dash-cam footage are also urged to contact police. "Any footage showing the vehicle before the collision occurred could be just as important as footage of the collision itself," said Detective Sergeant Cahill-Smith.

Anyone with information, dash-cam footage, mobile phone footage, or other digital media is asked to retain the original recording and contact police on 101, quoting reference 44260520753.
