Protesters block Louvre entrance as France riots continue
Protesters block Louvre entrance amid ongoing French riots

Protesters in Paris have blocked the entrance to the Louvre museum, one of France's biggest tourist attractions, as violent demonstrations threaten to continue into this week.

Images from the capital show a small crowd standing in front of the museum's entrance, holding banners including one that reads 'French public services are falling apart' in English.

Weekend of Violence and Arrests

The action follows riots on October 17, sparked by anger over the cost of living and a lack of opportunities for high school students, which led to hundreds of arrests across France.

In a televised speech yesterday evening, President Emmanuel Macron said the French people 'all feel anger and shame' at the scenes of violence, adding: 'Looking at these images, we all asked ourselves: What is going through their minds? How can French people do this to France?'

Government Response

This morning, Macron said he had refused the resignation of his interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, who has come under intense pressure.

In a statement, the Elysée Palace said the decision not to accept the resignation was due to 'the necessity for continued leadership of law enforcement at this time'.
