Tragic M60 Motorbike Crash Claims Life of 'Much-Loved' Former Serviceman
A former serviceman and beloved father tragically lost his life in a horrific motorbike crash on the M60 motorway last year, with an inquest concluding the cause remains a mystery. Andrew Peak, aged 58, was riding his Triumph motorbike on an anticlockwise stretch of the motorway when he was seen to veer away and leave the carriageway, leading to fatal injuries.
Details of the Devastating Incident
The crash occurred at approximately 1.30pm on July 12, 2025, between junctions 25 and 24, as Andrew was travelling between Stockport and Tameside. Emergency services, including the air ambulance, rushed to the scene, prompting a closure of the motorway. Andrew suffered a series of devastating injuries and was transported by road ambulance to the major trauma centre at Salford Royal Hospital, where he sadly died two days later.
An inquest held at South Manchester Coroner's Court in Stockport heard that the day of the crash was described as a lovely, bright sunny day with perfect driving and riding conditions. DC Simon Venguedasalon from Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit stated that no other vehicles were involved, and no faults were found on the motorbike. The investigation could not identify any single or obvious cause for the loss of control.
Andrew Peak's Life and Legacy
Andrew, who lived in Droylsden, was born and raised in Wythenshawe and joined the army at age 17, serving for four years in the Queen's Fusiliers. He later worked as a Pest Control Manager at Manchester City Council for many years, where colleagues retired his desk following his death as a mark of respect. A father-of-two, Andrew had a lifelong passion for motorbikes, getting his first Honda at age 16 and recently purchasing a Triumph bike, which he stored in a renovated shed.
The court heard that Andrew had been deeply affected by the loss of his second wife, Dawn, in 2024, after 18 years together. Despite this, he remained a positive figure, described by his son George as a great father who was happy, easy-going, and always willing to help others.
Inquest Findings and Family Tributes
Area Coroner Chris Morris recorded a conclusion that Andrew died as a result of a road traffic collision. He noted that Andrew was clearly held in high regard by former colleagues, friends, and family, having touched many lives. The coroner emphasized that a very detailed police investigation failed to pinpoint a cause, suggesting it may have been a momentary lapse of concentration.
In a heartfelt statement, George Peak paid tribute to his father, saying, "He taught me so much. He was happy and easy going. He always had a smile on his face. He would do anything for anyone." George added that the family has struggled immensely, and he has had to grow up quickly since the tragedy.
The family has praised Salford Royal Hospital and the North West Air Ambulance for their efforts and plans to raise money for the air ambulance charity in Andrew's memory. This tragic accident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of road safety, even under ideal conditions.
