Eric Dane memoir: heartbreaking hug moment with daughter Billie

A heartbreaking moment between Eric Dane and his daughter Billie has been revealed in the actor's posthumous memoir, showing how ALS affected his final months. In December 2025, after Billie performed in a production of The Nutcracker, Dane was unable to give her his usual hug because of his condition.

An excerpt published by People described how the actor, who died in February aged 53, told his daughter: "Billie, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I can't wrap my arms around you." Instead, it was Billie who embraced her dad, and the pair shed tears together.

A New Tradition That Never Came to Be

Dane had hoped the moment would become their new tradition. Sadly, he died months later surrounded by friends, his devoted wife, and his two daughters.

The Grey's Anatomy star had become a passionate advocate for awareness and research for ALS following his diagnosis last year. Despite his ill health, Dane continued to work, but he was too unwell to attend the Emmy Awards in January, a month before his death.

A 35-Year Career and Final Words

Dane enjoyed a 35-year career, during which time he appeared in Grey's Anatomy, Charmed, Euphoria and many more US TV series and films.

His family issued a statement at the time of his passing, saying: "With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time."

Final Message to His Daughters

In November last year, Dane recorded an interview with Brad Falchuk for Netflix's Famous Last Words, knowing the conversation would be released only after his death. The emotional message was aired in February following the sad news. In it, he ended by telling his daughters: "Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words."
