In a startling incident that could have ended in tragedy, a 72-year-old pensioner from Kent drove his black SUV straight into the sea following a pub lunch. The reckless joyride occurred on a sunny afternoon in Margate, leaving beachgoers and emergency services in a state of shock.
David Phillips was seen swerving his Nissan Qashqai across the beach before it became completely submerged in the waters of the English Channel. Dramatic footage captured the moment the vehicle drifted further out to sea, with only its roof rack visible above the waterline.
A Costly Afternoon Drink
Canterbury Magistrates' Court heard that Phillips had consumed a significant amount of alcohol during a lunchtime session at a local pub. Despite being nearly three times over the legal drink-drive limit, he decided to get behind the wheel.
Police and coastguard teams rushed to the scene at Margate Main Sands. Officers waded into the water to confirm the vehicle was empty before the driver was located safe, but undoubtedly embarrassed, on the beach.
Justice Served
The court handed Phillips a 12-month community order and banned him from driving for three years. He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £213 in costs and surcharges.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drink-driving, regardless of age. The incident highlights how quickly a single poor decision can escalate into a dangerous and public spectacle.
