Drug Driver Sentenced to Prison After High-Speed Police Pursuit
A 35-year-old site manager has been jailed after leading police on a terrifying 140mph chase that ended with his car somersaulting through the air following a crash into a roundabout. Ashley Parr, from Leeds, admitted multiple driving offences including dangerous driving, drug-driving, and drink driving at York Crown Court.
The High-Speed Pursuit and Dramatic Crash
On July 21 last year, police received reports of dangerous driving in the Garrowby Hill area on the A166 near York. Officers identified Parr's BMW 3 Series, registered to a Leeds address, and anticipated his route towards Leeds along the A64 westbound.
Traffic Constable Nick Simpson positioned himself at the A64 Fulford Interchange. Minutes later, the BMW sped past his location, prompting an immediate pursuit. After activating blue lights, Parr initially slowed but then made a sudden manoeuvre across hatched markings and accelerated away.
The chase reached speeds of 130mph on the A64 and peaked at 140mph on the M1 motorway. The pursuit came to a dramatic halt when Parr, travelling at excessive speed, struck a roundabout. The impact sent his BMW flying into the air, where it somersaulted before rolling several times and coming to rest in a roadside hedge.
Court Sentencing and Police Response
At York Crown Court on Monday, Parr was sentenced to 16 months in prison and banned from driving for three years and eight months. Following the sentencing, TC Simpson from North Yorkshire Police emphasised the gravity of the incident.
'This was extremely dangerous driving that could easily have resulted in the death of other road users, as well as the driver himself,' Simpson stated. 'We are relentless in our approach to making North Yorkshire's roads safer for everyone. Removing individuals who drive in this manner sends a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated.'
The police officer also thanked the member of the public who initially reported Parr's erratic driving, urging witnesses of dangerous driving to call 999 immediately.
