An aristocrat's high-speed dash through central London in his luxury sports car has ended with a costly driving ban and a substantial fine. Charles Henniker-Major, the 8th Earl of Yarborough, was caught racing his Porsche at nearly 100mph along a major London thoroughfare.
The Reckless Drive Through the Capital
The 42-year-old peer was clocked driving his powerful Porsche at a staggering 96mph in a 40mph zone on the A40 Eastbound at Old Oak Common Lane. This dangerous speed, more than double the legal limit, occurred in an area frequented by numerous vehicles and pedestrians.
Westminster Magistrates' Court heard how the Earl's expensive joyride through West London demonstrated a blatant disregard for road safety and speed restrictions designed to protect all road users.
Costly Consequences for the Peer
The legal repercussions have been severe for Lord Yarborough:
- A six-month driving disqualification
- A fine of £1,634 including court costs
- Mandatory victim surcharge of £654
Despite his guilty plea, the magistrate emphasised the seriousness of the offence, stating the speed was "so far above the limit" that only a substantial penalty would suffice.
A Pattern of Privilege and Penalties
This isn't the first time the Earl has faced legal consequences for his driving behaviour. Records show he previously received penalty points for exceeding variable speed limits through the Dartford Crossing.
The latest incident adds to a growing list of wealthy individuals facing serious penalties for dangerous driving in the capital, raising questions about whether money and status influence driving attitudes.
With his driving licence now revoked for six months, the Earl will need to find alternative transport for his journeys between his Lincolnshire estate and London engagements.
