World Cup bargains are at risk as summer parcel thefts surge. Prime Day has been brought forward this year, giving shoppers the chance to snap up deals during the World Cup, but security experts are now warning that Britain's porch pirates could be targeting some of the year's most valuable deliveries such as TVs and Hi-Fi systems.
Sharp Increase in Parcel Thefts
New analysis of police data found more than 2,800 parcel thefts were reported across the UK during the summer months of June, July and August 2025, with the sharpest increase coming in June, when theft reports rose by 92%. The total value of parcels stolen across the UK now stands at £666.5 million, while the average stolen parcel is worth £138 – suggesting thieves are increasingly targeting higher-value items.
Prime Day and World Cup Fuel Risk
The research by Quadient also found that almost 60% of parcel thefts occur between 9am and 5pm, when many households are at work and deliveries are most likely to be left unattended. More than a third (37%) of victims said parcel theft left them feeling anxious, highlighting the impact these crimes can have beyond the financial cost.
Katia Bourgeais-Crémel, director of lockers automation Europe at Quadient, said: “With the 2026 World Cup now underway, many shoppers are using Prime Day deals to purchase team merchandise, home entertainment tech, or other higher-value items to make the most of the tournament. Unfortunately, these are exactly the kinds of deliveries that can attract the attention of opportunistic thieves.
“With theft reports rising sharply in June and the value of stolen parcels at a record high, consumers should think carefully about where their purchases will be delivered and whether they'll be left unattended.”
Security Recommendations
With Prime Day expected to trigger a surge in deliveries during the World Cup, the experts say consumers should always consider secure delivery options such as parcel lockers and collection points, while also urging retailers and carriers to make delivery security a greater priority than the current status quo.
