Robert William McCaffrey Jr., a 54-year-old resident of Manteo, North Carolina, has been apprehended in connection with a decades-old homicide case, marking a significant breakthrough in a long-unsolved investigation. The Sussex County Prosecutor's Office in New Jersey announced the arrest over the weekend, linking McCaffrey to the 1990 murder of Lisa Marie McBride.
Breakthrough in a Cold Case
Lisa Marie McBride was just 27 years old when her remains were discovered in 1990. Authorities believe the murder occurred around June 23 of that year in Vernon Township, New Jersey. For over three decades, the case remained cold, frustrating investigators and McBride's family.
This arrest was made possible through significant advancements in DNA technology, combined with the relentless investigative efforts of detectives from the New Jersey State Police, the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office, and the Vernon Township Police Department, the prosecutor's office stated in a press release.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
McCaffrey, who previously lived in Sussex County, New Jersey, and Charleston County, South Carolina, was arrested on Friday night. He is currently being held in Dare County, North Carolina, awaiting extradition to Sussex County to face charges.
The North Carolina man is expected to be charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and second-degree burglary in connection with McBride's case. Information regarding McCaffrey's current legal representation remains unclear at this time.
Connection to Wife's Disappearance
McCaffrey has also been closely tied to the disappearance of his wife, Marjorie "Gayle" McCaffrey. Gayle, then 36 years old, vanished from Charleston, South Carolina, on March 17, 2012. At the time, her husband was named the prime suspect in her case, according to local news outlet WCSC.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office recently reshared information about Gayle's case on social media last month, asking for the public's assistance in finding her after 14 years. Authorities revealed that the couple had a verbal disagreement the night before her disappearance.
Robert McCaffrey reported that the argument had grown heated so he went for a walk to give his wife time to calm down. When he came back, he said that his wife was still upset, so he left the house and drove to the Upstate, the sheriff's office explained. Upon his return the next morning, Robert McCaffrey reported that his wife was missing and that she had left the family on her own accord—never to be heard from again.
Past Legal Issues and Convictions
The couple had a 4-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter at the time of Gayle's disappearance. Gayle was legally declared dead in 2018, and that same year, McCaffrey was charged with her murder, as reported by NewsNation.
However, a grand jury failed to indict McCaffrey due to a lack of evidence, according to court documents cited by WCSC. Despite this, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office noted that McCaffrey was convicted of obstructing justice in the case.
Detectives found that he had lied to them during the investigation, including a farewell letter supposedly from Gayle McCaffrey that was determined to have been fabricated. McCaffrey was later released from prison in 2023, but Gayle's disappearance remains unsolved.
Progress Toward Justice
While the mystery of Gayle's fate continues, the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office emphasized that McCaffrey's latest arrest brings long-awaited progress toward justice for McBride's family. The Independent has reached out to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office for further comment on the ongoing investigations.
This case highlights the persistent efforts of law enforcement to solve cold cases using modern technology and dedicated detective work, offering hope to families seeking closure after years of uncertainty.
