Killer's Chilling Laughter During Police Interview After Random Murder

This is the disturbing moment a convicted murderer laughed during a police interview after being questioned about kicking a complete stranger to death. The horrific incident occurred following a serious car crash while the perpetrator was under the influence of drugs.

Drug-Fuelled Rampage Ends in Tragedy

Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, aged 24, violently attacked and killed Nila Patel, 56, in a completely random assault after flipping his BMW vehicle in Leicester on June 24 last year. Shocking CCTV footage captured the entire sequence of events, showing Ahanonu driving erratically through the town centre before the fatal collision.

The footage reveals him swerving dangerously across lanes, running through traffic lights, and heading directly toward a busy bus stop and pedestrians crossing the road. After emerging unscathed from the wreckage of his vehicle, Ahanonu targeted Nila Patel at random, punching her repeatedly and stamping on her head with brutal force.

The victim suffered catastrophic injuries including a fractured skull and severe brain trauma. She was rushed to hospital but tragically passed away two days later, unable to recover from the vicious assault.

Court Proceedings and Disturbing Interview

Ahanonu, originally from Peckham in south-east London but residing in Leicester at the time of the attack, initially admitted manslaughter but denied murder on grounds of diminished responsibility. However, Leicester Crown Court found him guilty of murder yesterday and sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of twenty-one and a half years.

During his police interview, Ahanonu claimed he could only recall the collision and had no memory of attacking Ms. Patel. "I don't remember even doing this. I can't remember anything do you understand?" he told officers. When shown footage of the violent incident, he began laughing inexplicably.

An officer immediately questioned this reaction, asking "Why are you laughing?" Ahanonu responded, "Because if I don't laugh, I'll cry. If I don't laugh I'll cry, I'm in so much pain." This chilling moment has been described as particularly disturbing by investigators.

Victim Remembered as Kind and Loving

Nila Patel was described by her family as a "beautiful, vibrant soul" and "one of the most kind-hearted people you could ever meet." She had been traveling on a bus in the vicinity when the collision occurred and had alighted to begin walking home when she was savagely attacked.

Her children, Jaidan and Danika Patel, paid an emotional tribute, stating: "Our mum was not just a name in this case. She was a loving mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and the heart of our family. She was our best friend and our biggest supporter."

They added: "Mum was a single mother who faced many obstacles and hardships throughout her life - challenges that would have broken most people. Yet regardless of what she endured, she would always conclude each day with a smile radiant enough to uplift everyone around her."

Investigation Details and Community Response

The court heard that security personnel from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary rushed to the scene and successfully restrained Ahanonu until police officers arrived. After his arrest, it was discovered that Ahanonu had been smoking cannabis and was carrying dealer bags of the drug in his vehicle.

Detective Inspector Emma Matts of Leicestershire Police commented: "This was the most horrific, violent and random attack by a stranger on a kind, gentle and loving woman who was simply making her way home. It is hard to imagine what Ms Patel went through in those moments."

She continued: "Footage we obtained during our enquiries which showed Ahanonu's movements in the vehicle just prior to the collision is frightening and disturbing. At the time of the incident, there were a lot of people in the area who witnessed the collision and subsequent attack, with a number bravely trying to help Ms Patel and also apprehending Ahanonu."

Ahanonu had previously admitted to dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply class B drugs, and assault of an emergency worker. The investigation revealed he was completely unknown to his victim, making the attack even more random and senseless.

The victim's family highlighted their mother's compassionate nature even in her final moments, noting: "The fact that mum was concerned about the defendant after his crash shows exactly the type of person she was. Even in that moment, her instinct was to show concern for someone else."

Detective Inspector Matts concluded by commending the bravery of witnesses and hospital staff who assisted at the scene, stating that their actions helped secure the conviction and bring some measure of justice for Nila Patel and her grieving family.
