A former university student is awaiting his fate after admitting to a series of sexual offences in a daylight attack in south-east London.
Chao Xu, 23, pleaded guilty at Woolwich crown court to attempted rape, sexual assault by penetration, and assault by beating of a woman in her 20s. The shocking incident occurred on Thursday, 29 May 2025, in the Greenwich area.
The court heard how the victim was attacked in broad daylight, prompting a significant response from the Metropolitan Police. Detectives from the local South East Command Unit launched an investigation, which led to Xu's identification and arrest.
Swift Police Work Leads to Arrest
Following the attack, investigators released a public appeal for information, including images of a man they wished to speak to. The public response was swift and crucial. Just two days after the appeal, on Saturday, 31 May, Xu was located and arrested.
He was subsequently charged and has been in custody since. The Metropolitan Police have praised the public for their assistance, which was instrumental in making a rapid arrest.
University Connections and Ongoing Case
At the time of the offence, Chao Xu was a student at the University of Greenwich. Following his arrest and charge, the university confirmed his status as a student and stated they were providing support to their community and cooperating with the police investigation.
With his guilty plea now entered, the case has been adjourned for sentencing. A date for this hearing is expected to be set in the near future at the same court.
The victim continues to receive specialist support from trained officers as the legal process continues.
