Dr Ranj Singh Opens Up About Coming Out as Gay While Married
Dr Ranj Singh on Coming Out as Gay While Married

Dr Ranj Singh has candidly discussed his journey of coming out as gay while married to a woman, a realisation that emerged during therapy. The 46-year-old TV medic and former This Morning star discovered his true sexuality at the age of 30, while living with his wife of seven years.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Singh explained that he had achieved everything he thought would bring happiness: a successful career, a home of his own, and a seemingly perfect life. Yet, he still felt unfulfilled. 'I had the career I’d always wanted, I always wanted a home of my own. I’d ticked all my boxes. So the big question was, why am I still not 100 per cent happy? Why does it still feel like something’s not right? And that’s when therapy brought all of that stuff out,' he told The Big Issue.

He described the moment of realisation as 'everything fracturing and then falling apart,' adding, 'This perfect life that you’ve imagined and hoped for and dreamt of and worked towards isn’t your perfect life.'

Dealing with the Aftermath

After his marriage ended, Singh faced the difficult task of telling friends and family. 'I was married and obviously that relationship broke down and then it was dealing with everybody else, friends and family,' he said. Therapy helped him understand that he was not 'the person I thought I should be or thought I was going to be.'

Today, Singh is in a relationship with actor James Colebrook, having found happiness after a challenging period.

Strictly Come Dancing and Advocacy

In 2018, Singh appeared as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, where he lobbied to dance with a man, two years before the BBC show introduced same-sex couples. He ultimately danced with Janette Manrara and was eliminated in the seventh week.

Morning Live Absence

Earlier this year, Singh denied claims he had been sacked by Morning Live bosses, explaining he was 'unable' to appear due to corporate work with certain brands. He has been the show's resident medic since 2020 but took a six-month break, prompting viewer speculation. In an Instagram post, he clarified: 'Have I left Morning Live? No, I haven’t. I’m actually taking a break while I focus on some of my other projects.'

He added, 'Whilst I’m doing that corporate work, I can’t be on Morning Live. I haven't fallen out with anybody, I haven't been replaced. My hope is to go back to Morning Live as soon as my brand work is over.'

Medical Career on Hold

Singh also revealed he has put his licence to practise on hold after 20 years in the NHS. 'Back in 2024, I had been working in the NHS for about 20 years. I got to the level I wanted to get to. I was a consultant in children’s A&E, my dream job. I absolutely loved it,' he said. 'Having done it for a few years I decided I needed a new challenge, a bit of a change. I wanted to pursue some dreams while I still could. I decided to put my licence to practise on hold.' He emphasised that he remains a fully registered doctor and is not in any trouble.
