Carer admits stealing £8,000 from vulnerable OAP in Glasgow

A Glasgow carer has admitted embezzling £8,000 from a vulnerable OAP at a supported housing complex. Gaynor Ewart, 49, appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court on Friday, August 12, and admitted the crime.

Details of the theft

Ewart, from Glasgow, stole the bank card from the victim, who is understood to be in her 80s. She then allegedly spent the money on holidays, new trainers and designer gear. The offending took place at Trust Housing Association's supported housing complex in Thornliebank between June 1, 2022 and June 17, 2023.

A source told the Record: "Ewart abused her position of trust to swipe this lady's bank card and hard-earned cash, it's absolutely rotten. She would come into work in new designer clothes all the time."

Social media posts

The source added: "She even went on several trips to Florida during this period. We were all wondering how she could financially do it." Images shared by Ewart on her social media channels show her taking selfies on a plane during the time of the offending. Other posts show her sharing images of family at Disneyland.

The source continued: "I don't know how she sleeps at night knowing that she stole from a vulnerable lady who has probably worked all of her life. The money is gone and she'll never see a penny of it ever again. Yet Ewart so blatantly brags about her trips on social media. It's just vile."

Court proceedings

Ewart had initially faced charges of stealing nearly £20,000 from the pensioner. However, the lesser charge of £8,000 was accepted by the prosecutor. She is due to be sentenced at the same court on September 17.
