Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has disabled comments on a recent social media post after receiving a barrage of online abuse. The 31-year-old midfielder was part of the Portugal squad that exited the World Cup at the last-16 stage, losing 1-0 to Spain thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Arsenal's Mikel Merino.
Fernandes expresses disappointment after Portugal exit
Fernandes took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his feelings following the defeat. "Sad, frustrated, and disillusioned," he wrote. "This group of players made my expectations high, not only for the quality, but also for the fact of the incredible group that we built over these years." He thanked the players, technical team, staff, and Portuguese supporters for their support throughout the tournament.
The post, however, attracted abusive comments from some Portugal fans and supporters of Cristiano Ronaldo. In response, Fernandes turned off the comments function on the post.
Ronaldo's sister fuels controversy
During the tournament, Cristiano Ronaldo's sister, Katia Aveiro, appeared to criticise Fernandes. After Portugal's opening draw with DR Congo, she 'liked' an Instagram post featuring a picture of Fernandes with the caption: "This one here is the Raphinha for Portugal. Too much popcorn for the national team." Ronaldo, who scored three goals in the World Cup, has a large fanbase that often targets perceived critics.
Manager Roberto Martinez steps down
Following Portugal's elimination, manager Roberto Martinez announced his resignation. "It's the end of the cycle," he told reporters. "It's important to have a new voice, a new leader." Martinez, who had been in charge for three and a half years, said he came with the goal of winning the World Cup and, having failed, it did not make sense to continue.
