A senior technology manager at the American healthcare behemoth UnitedHealthcare is facing serious terrorism charges in a London court, accused of attempting to leverage his IT expertise to aid the Islamic State group.
Luigi Mangione, 35, a resident of north London, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court following his arrest by the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command. The Italian national stands accused of a single count of attempting to provide material support to a proscribed terrorist organisation between December 2023 and January 2024.
The Allegations
Prosecutors allege that Mangione, who held a trusted position within UnitedHealthcare's IT infrastructure, attempted to use his advanced technical knowledge to provide support to ISIS. While specific details of the alleged activities remain under investigation, the charges suggest a sophisticated attempt to assist the group's online operations.
The court heard that the alleged offences were not connected to his employment at UnitedHealthcare, a leading health insurance and services provider. The company has confirmed it is cooperating fully with authorities.

Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring presided over the hearing. Mangione spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address. No plea was entered during the initial hearing.
In a significant decision, the magistrate granted Mangione conditional bail ahead of his next appearance. He is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court, for a preliminary hearing on 31st January. The conditions of his bail have not been publicly disclosed.
