Ofcom has imposed a record £950,000 fine on the provider of an online suicide forum for hosting illegal content readily accessible within Britain. The regulator stated the service has been linked to over 130 deaths across the country and was cited in several coroners' reports.
Details of the Breaches
The forum contained content actively encouraging or assisting suicide, including instructional material and discussions designed to guide vulnerable users. Ofcom's investigation found the provider failed to carry out adequate risk assessments, implement effective systems to prevent exposure to illegal content, or remove it quickly.
Regulatory Action and Response
The regulator is prepared to seek a court order to block access to the forum in Britain if breaches continue. Charities have questioned why the investigation took more than a year to trigger action against the website.
Mia Janin's father has pleaded with the government for a revision of the Online Safety Bill, urging further action to tackle what he described as an 'appalling' suicide advice forum.
Ofcom's fine is the largest ever issued for such violations, underscoring the severity of the platform's failures. The case highlights ongoing concerns about online safety and the regulation of harmful content targeting vulnerable individuals.
