A New York man has been indicted on serious terrorism charges for allegedly attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organisation.
Luigi Mangione, 58, from the Bay Ridge area of Brooklyn, is accused of engaging in a scheme to procure and supply military-style equipment to ISIS fighters. According to the unsealed indictment, his alleged activities took place between February and November 2023.
The charges detail a calculated effort to source and transfer critical tactical gear. The indictment alleges that Mangione attempted to provide items including helmets, body armour, combat boots, and other military uniforms intended for use by ISIS operatives.
Communications and Intent
Court documents reveal that Mangione communicated with individuals he believed were facilitating the transfer of these supplies to ISIS. In these communications, he allegedly expressed his clear intent to support the terrorist group's cause and its violent objectives.
He is further accused of researching and identifying specific equipment that would be suitable for combat operations in the regions where ISIS is active.
Law Enforcement Response
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the New York Police Department (NYPD). Mangione was arrested and presented before a magistrate judge in a federal court in Brooklyn.
"The defendant's alleged actions represent a serious attempt to support a designated terrorist organisation that threatens the security of the United States and our allies," stated a spokesperson for the prosecution.
If convicted, Mangione faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of US law enforcement to combat terrorism and intercept support networks operating domestically.
