Enzo Maresca has signed a three-year deal to take over from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, according to reports. The Italian previously served as Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad before managing Leicester City and Chelsea. He was dismissed by Chelsea earlier this year but has now secured a return to Manchester.
Guardiola's Departure and Swift Replacement
City's hierarchy had been waiting on a decision from Guardiola, who had 12 months remaining on his contract. Speculation about his departure was constant, and it was confirmed last week. The club acted quickly to find a successor, with Maresca agreeing terms to become the new manager.
Maresca's Previous Roles
Maresca worked as Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City before taking the Leicester City job. His success there earned him the top role at Chelsea, where he won the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup. He was sacked by the Blues earlier this year but had previously admitted to holding talks with City about eventually replacing Guardiola.
Guardiola's Message to Successor
Outgoing manager Guardiola has vowed to phone his replacement and offer support. He said: "When the club tell me who it is, of course I will call him. I will tell him, 'Be yourself and the club will support you unconditionally.' That is the biggest compliment, or the biggest luck that all the managers who have been here have had. You will be protected in the bad moments more than any other club. Be yourself, be free, go with your ideas. Work a lot and everything will be fine."
Transfer Strategy and Targets
Maresca will be fully involved in the club's transfer strategy, with City targeting certain areas of the squad. Elliot Anderson is understood to be a key target as the club continues to regenerate its squad. In the final 18 months of Guardiola's reign, City signed players like Marc Guehi, Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov, who are expected to be crucial in the coming years.
Guardiola's Legacy
Guardiola leaves after 10 years at Manchester City, during which he won 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League as part of a treble in 2023. His final season saw a domestic cup double, but the team finished as runners-up in the league.
