A shocking billboard that appeared in Melbourne's central business district has been forcibly removed after it promoted the Hamas October 7 attacks as a celebratory event, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation.
Controversial Advertisement in Heart of Melbourne
The digital advertisement, displayed prominently in Melbourne's CBD, featured text reading 'October 7' with a parachute symbol, directly referencing the Hamas terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan expressed her disgust, stating: 'There is no place for this in Victoria. It is hate speech, plain and simple.'
Swift Action and Political Condemnation
The billboard was removed within hours of being reported, with the building's owner confirming the advertisement had been taken down immediately. Federal Liberal MP Keith Wolahan, a former Australian Army officer, condemned the advertisement as 'disgusting' and emphasized that celebrating terrorism has no place in Australia.
Opposition Leader John Pesutto joined the chorus of condemnation, describing the billboard as 'sickening' and calling for unity against such displays of hatred.
Community Response and Ongoing Concerns
The Executive Council of Australian Jewry reported the billboard to Australian Federal Police, while the Zionist Federation of Australia is pursuing legal action. Dr Dvir Abramovich, chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission, labeled the incident 'a moral sickness' and called for stronger measures against hate speech.
This incident occurs amidst growing concerns about rising antisemitism in Australia, with community leaders warning that such displays normalize violence and threaten social cohesion.
