School holidays are notoriously expensive for family getaways, but a travel specialist reveals that flexibility and choosing a 'golden week' can significantly reduce costs. With May half-term over, parents are planning for the six-week summer break, but holiday prices soar during this period. Research shows that holidaymakers pay an extra £388 per person on average during school holidays compared to term-time breaks, with July and August seeing the highest price hikes for both staycations and overseas trips.
Expert Tips for Cheaper Summer Holidays
Dawn Morwood, co-director of Cheap Deals Away UK, shares insights on saving money. 'Most people assume all summer flights are expensive, but there are specific days that offer much better value,' she says. By analyzing price fluctuations from recent years, Dawn notes that the summer flight market follows predictable patterns. Prices peak during school holidays in late July and early August, but there are pockets of opportunity earlier and later in the season.
Most Expensive and Cheapest Days to Fly
The most expensive days to fly are July 22, 23, and 29, when flights can cost up to 40% more. Shifting your travel dates by even a day or two can save a significant amount. Check your child's school holiday dates on GOV.UK, as some schools break up early due to inset days, allowing you to travel before prices rise. The last two weeks of August are often called the 'golden weeks' due to drops in flight and package holiday prices. August 28 is typically when prices fall, as it's the final weekend of most school holidays. If your child doesn't return until September 3 or 4, you can enjoy a cheap short break in the sunshine.
Example Savings
For a family of four travelling to Globales Binimar & Aqua Centre Waterpark in Menorca with Jet2, departing on July 25 costs £2,679. Departing on July 23 saves £279, while waiting until August 27 saves £543. Families near the Scottish borders can also benefit from different holiday dates. Scottish schools have summer holidays from late June to mid-August, so flying from a Scottish airport later in the summer can be cheaper.
Term-Time Breaks
Dawn advises that early June offers a sweet spot between good weather and good prices. However, parents should note that most councils have increased fines for unauthorised term-time absence to £80 per parent per child, meaning a family of four could be fined four times over.
