Counter-terrorism detectives have identified the man responsible for last week's shocking attack on a north London synagogue as 29-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie. The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are treating the violent incident as an Islamist-inspired terrorist attack.
The assault occurred on Monday when the suspect allegedly drove a van into a group of pedestrians near the synagogue before crashing into the building itself. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as emergency services rushed to the scene.
Police Response and Investigation
Armed response units were immediately dispatched to the location, where they successfully apprehended the suspect at the scene. Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, stated that the investigation is progressing rapidly with multiple lines of enquiry being pursued.
"This was a frightening attack on a place of worship and community," Commander Murphy said. "We're working closely with the local community and partner agencies to ensure public safety and bring those responsible to justice."
Community Impact and Security Measures
The attack has sent shockwaves through London's Jewish community, with community leaders expressing both concern and resilience. Security around religious buildings across the capital has been heightened in response to the incident.
Local resident Sarah Cohen, who witnessed the attack, described the moment as "utterly terrifying". "We heard this enormous crash and then saw people running. You never expect something like this to happen on your doorstep," she told reporters.
The investigation continues as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and whether the suspect acted alone or had connections to wider networks.
