Gunmen Launch Assault on Building Housing Israeli Consulate in Istanbul
In a brazen daylight attack, three gunmen opened fire on police officers stationed outside a building housing the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday. The violent confrontation resulted in one assailant being killed and two police officers sustaining injuries, according to statements from Turkish officials. The two other attackers were captured with injuries following the intense exchange of gunfire.
Details of the Attack and Investigation
Istanbul Governor Davut Gul informed reporters that the assailants were armed with long-barreled weapons during the assault. Interior Minister Mustafa Cifti revealed on social media platform X that the attackers had travelled from the city of Izmit, approximately 100 kilometers east of Istanbul, using a rented vehicle. Minister Cifti noted that one of the individuals was connected to a group he described as exploiting religion, though he did not specify the organization by name.
Turkish authorities have identified the two wounded assailants as brothers, Onur C. and Enes C. It was disclosed that Onur C. has a prior criminal record related to drug offences. Both individuals are currently undergoing interrogation by the Interior Ministry. In response to the incident, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that three prosecutors, including a deputy chief prosecutor, have been assigned to lead a comprehensive investigation into the attack.
Location and Security Context
The Israeli Consulate is situated within a high-rise building in Levent, one of Istanbul's primary business districts. Officials confirmed that no Israeli diplomats were present at the mission at the time of the attack. Israel had previously withdrawn its diplomatic personnel from Turkey due to escalating security concerns and deteriorating bilateral relations, particularly following the conflict in Gaza.
Video footage from the scene depicted one assailant carrying what appeared to be an assault rifle and wearing a brown backpack, taking cover behind a bus while exchanging fire with police. The footage also showed a police officer falling to the ground after apparently being shot, before rolling to seek cover behind a tree. The Interior Ministry reported that one police officer was injured in the leg and another in the ear during the clash.
International Condemnation and Historical Context
U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, strongly condemned the attack and commended Turkish authorities for their swift and decisive response. In a statement posted on X, Ambassador Barrack emphasized that attacks on diplomatic missions are attacks on the international order and an assault on the principles that bind nations together.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of previous deadly attacks in Turkey carried out by groups such as the Islamic State. The correction of initial reports, which erroneously stated two attackers had been killed, underscores the fluid nature of such developing situations. Only one of the three assailants was confirmed killed, with the other two captured injured, as clarified by Turkish officials.
