Three British men have formally denied charges of planning to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State terror organisation, with prosecutors alleging they used a group chat ironically titled "Lads Holiday" to coordinate their activities. Chafik Aziz, aged 18, Muhammed Bham, 19, and Oliver Rea, 24, appeared at the Central Criminal Court, commonly known as the Old Bailey, in London on Friday.
Not Guilty Pleas Entered at Old Bailey Hearing
All three defendants pleaded not guilty to engaging in conduct in preparation of acts of terrorism, with the alleged offences occurring between March and November 2025. The charges stem from a comprehensive investigation into their activities, which prosecutors claim were meticulously planned through encrypted messaging platforms.
Alleged Planning Activities Revealed in Court
The court heard detailed allegations about the trio's preparations, which reportedly included writing farewell letters to family members, conducting extensive research about Islamic State operations, booking flights to Turkey, and obtaining or renewing passports. Prosecutors stated the men sold personal belongings and resigned from their employment as part of their alleged preparations.
According to evidence presented, the defendants researched what uniform and camouflage were used by Islamic State fighters, investigated how to enter IS-controlled territory, and shared advice on evading detection and arrest by authorities. The prosecution alleges they participated in Signal group chats named "AirBNB Buddies" and "Lads Holiday," where they reportedly encouraged each other to join the terrorist organisation.
Additional Charges for Social Media Activity
Oliver Rea faces additional charges beyond the terrorism preparation allegations. He has confessed to two counts of soliciting support for Islamic State on TikTok and two further charges of expressing backing for both Al Qaida and Islamic State on the social media platform. However, Rea has denied three additional charges of disseminating terrorist documents through TikTok.
Court Proceedings and Future Dates
The defendants entered their pleas before Judge Mark Lucraft KC at the Old Bailey. Chafik Aziz appeared physically in the dock, while Oliver Rea participated via videolink from Belmarsh prison and Muhammed Bham appeared from Doncaster jail. At the conclusion of the hearing, Aziz waved and blew a kiss to his co-defendants.
Judge Lucraft has scheduled a further hearing for May 15, with the full trial set to commence at the Old Bailey on November 30. All three men have been remanded into custody pending their trial. Aziz resides in Wallington, south London, Bham is from Dewsbury in Yorkshire, and Rea comes from Arnold in Nottinghamshire.
Prosecution's Detailed Allegations
The charges against the three defendants allege they researched what equipment, kit and weapons would be necessary for their planned trip to Syria, including where and how to acquire such items. Prosecutors claim they secured new passports and raised funds specifically for their alleged intention to join Islamic State fighters in Syria.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about radicalisation through digital platforms and the use of encrypted messaging services for coordinating extremist activities. The "Lads Holiday" group chat name represents what prosecutors describe as a deliberate attempt to disguise the true nature of their communications while planning what they allegedly believed would be a one-way journey to join a proscribed terrorist organisation.
