A 40-year-old tribal widow in India was brutally attacked and gang-raped by seven armed men who broke into her home on Friday night, allegedly searching for silver. The incident occurred in Alijapur, a small village in the Bori police station area of Madhya Pradesh state.
Protest and Police Response
Villagers and social organisations staged a sit-in outside Bori police station, demanding immediate arrest of all perpetrators. Protesters shouted slogans against police and administration, threatening a blockade if the remaining suspects are not captured. The district administration deployed additional police force to manage the protest.
Police have arrested four suspects, while multiple specialised teams continue raids to locate the remaining accused. The case drew attention from major politicians who visited the widow's family and directed police to enforce zero-tolerance protocols against the accused.
Broader Context of Violence Against Women
India has struggled for years to tackle high rates of violence against women, with numerous rape cases capturing global attention, according to CNN. Despite some legal changes, victims and campaigners say the government is still not doing enough to protect women and punish attackers.
Government statistics show India recorded 29,536 rape cases in 2024, though activists say assaults are widely underreported. They cite deeper structural problems, including a deeply patriarchal society in some regions.
Gender Inequality Rankings
According to the World Economic Forum’s 2025 Gender Gap Report, India ranks 131st out of 148 countries in terms of opportunities provided to women. This highlights persistent gender disparities despite economic growth.
