A former Florida police officer has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide and reckless driving after a high-speed crash killed a six-year-old girl and severely injured her family. Zachary Krug, 25, was driving an unmarked Temple Terrace Police Department vehicle at 104 mph in a 50 mph zone on April 15 when he struck a car making a turn, according to prosecutors.
Crash Details and Fatalities
The incident occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Fowler Avenue and North Avenue in Tampa, Florida. Krug, who was reportedly late for his shift, allegedly turned on his emergency lights to run a red light and accelerated to 104 mph. He struck a vehicle driven by Samantha Sakowski, who was completing Uber Eats deliveries with her three children aboard. The impact occurred at approximately 74 mph, hitting the passenger side of Sakowski's car.
Sakowski's six-year-old daughter, Leila, died from her injuries. Two other children, an eight-year-old and an 18-month-old, were rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. Sakowski suffered broken ribs and two black eyes. The 18-month-old sustained a concussion.
Legal Proceedings and Defense
Krug was charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving. At a bond hearing in May, prosecutors presented dash camera footage showing Krug accelerating 30 seconds before the crash. However, defense attorney Ralph Fernandez argued that Krug was on duty and pursuing a speeding motorist. "A vehicle was in front, took off, left a patch of smoke, ran a light, he began to follow. Then he stopped, then he had to give chase as a result of the catch-up provisions, and then the tragedy struck," Fernandez said.
Prosecutor's Response
State Attorney Suzy Lopez dismissed the pursuit claim, stating there was no evidence of another vehicle. "I am absolutely sickened by what happened on that afternoon. This was just a regular old Wednesday afternoon when this officer decided that what he needed to do was more important than what anybody else on the road was doing. He endangered lives and he killed a six-year-old girl by the choices that he made," Lopez said. "No one is above the law, this now former officer was charged with protecting the public and keeping people safe, and he did the exact opposite of that."
Victim Recovery and Community Support
A GoFundMe page set up for the family has raised over $19,000. An update on May 30 stated that the eight-year-old, Lily, continues to make progress in physical and occupational therapy. "Lily continues to make progress every day. She has been working hard in both physical and occupational therapy, and her doctors are hopeful that she will be able to return home within the next couple of weeks. While she still has a long road ahead, her strength and determination continue to inspire everyone around her," the update read. Lily will require ongoing therapy and anti-seizure medication upon returning home.
Krug was fired from the Temple Terrace Police Department following the incident. He was booked into Hillsborough County Jail and released after posting a $90,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 13.
