Michael Doherty, 46, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for the attempted murder of a 56-year-old man in Port Glasgow. The sentencing took place at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, following a guilty verdict on February 24, 2026.
Details of the Attack
Emergency services were called to a property on Teviot Road in Port Glasgow at around 9am on Friday, January 26, 2024, after reports of a man being injured. The victim, a 56-year-old man, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment.
Doherty was arrested and charged with attempted murder. He was found guilty after a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
Sentencing and Police Response
Returning to the same court on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Doherty was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Detective Inspector Nicky Beattie of Police Scotland commented: “This was a violent attack which left a man with very serious injuries. Doherty will now face the consequences of his actions in prison. Violence has no place in our communities and we remain committed to bringing those responsible for such crimes to justice.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “A man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for an attempted murder in Port Glasgow. Michael Doherty, 46, was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday, 7 July, after being found guilty at the same court on Tuesday, February 24. Around 9.40am on Friday, January 26, 2024, police received a report of an injured man within a property on Teviot Road, Port Glasgow. Emergency services attended and the man, aged 56, was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to serious injuries.”
