Jonty Bravery, the man convicted of throwing a six-year-old boy from the tenth-floor balcony of the Tate Modern, is due to be sentenced for a violent attack on two nurses at the high-security psychiatric hospital where he is detained.
Violent Assault on Hospital Staff
Bravery, now 24, was found guilty of assaulting nurses Linda McKinlay and Kate Mastalerz at Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire in September 2024. The incident occurred when Bravery, who requires constant supervision by three staff members, attempted to climb a ledge to harm himself after using the bathroom.
When the nurses intervened to restrain him, Bravery kicked Ms Mastalerz in the thigh and clawed at Ms McKinlay's face, causing injuries that left blood dripping down her cheek. Body-worn footage shown in court captured the struggle, with a panicked staff member heard shouting for assistance.
A History of Violence and Previous Convictions
Bravery is already serving a life sentence for the horrific 2019 attack at the Tate Modern, in which he hurled a young French boy from a great height. The child survived the 100ft (30m) fall but sustained life-changing injuries, including a brain bleed and multiple fractures.
This is not Bravery's first assault on staff at Broadmoor. In 2020, he was jailed for an additional 14 weeks after admitting attacks on other healthcare workers, including punching one assistant and biting another.
Impact on Victims and Court Proceedings
At his trial at Westminster Magistrates' Court in November, which he chose not to attend, nurse Linda McKinlay described the profound impact of the assault. A grandmother with a long career at the hospital, she stated it was the first time she had ever been attacked there, leaving her "very shaken".
Fellow nurse Kate Mastalerz said the event was a "very stressful situation" that left her with a bruised thigh. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring, finding Bravery guilty of both assault charges, concluded that the defendant had "went too far" during the incident.
Bravery is scheduled to be sentenced for these latest offences on Thursday, 8 January 2026. He remains held at Broadmoor Hospital under the strictest security conditions.
