Driver pleads guilty to killing teen at Essex bus stop

A motorist has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a 15-year-old boy and inflicting life-changing injuries on another child after crashing into them as they waited for a school bus.

Court Hearing and Guilty Plea

During a hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, Stephen Mahebadevan, 26, of Chelmsford, admitted to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The incident occurred on the morning of November 3, 2023, in Stock, Essex.

Judge Mary Loram KC released Mahebadevan on bail ahead of sentencing next month but warned him to expect a 'significant period of imprisonment'. She remarked on the profound tragedy of the case, stating the court deals with much tragedy but could not think of a more tragic loss.

A Community in Mourning

The victim, Freddie Coleman, was pronounced dead at the scene. He and another pupil from Mayflower High School in Billericay were waiting at the bus stop when the collision happened. The second teenager was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition and survived with life-altering injuries.

Freddie's parents, Jason and Jo, paid a heartfelt tribute to their son, describing him as a 'kind, happy, funny boy' who was 'loved by everybody'. They requested privacy during what they called a 'dreadful time'.

The local community and school were devastated by the loss. Scores of floral tributes, candles, and messages were left outside Mayflower High School. The school opened a book of condolence, and a fundraiser set up to support Freddie's family raised more than £25,000 in just 48 hours.

Ongoing Impact and Sentencing Ahead

Headteacher Damian Lee described Freddie as 'much loved and respected'. Detective Inspector Mark Fraser of Essex Police confirmed that extensive enquiries, including reviews of dashcam and CCTV footage, were conducted to determine the precise circumstances of the collision.

Around two dozen family members attended the court hearing, with many weeping as the guilty pleas were entered. Full details of the defendant's driving are expected to be revealed during the sentencing hearing next month.
