Third Murder Conviction for 'The Iceman'
Mark Fellows, the hitman known as 'The Iceman', has been found guilty of a third murder, stabbing child killer Kyle Bevan to death in HMP Wakefield on November 4 last year. Fellows, 45, was already serving two whole-life sentences for the murders of Salford gangland figure Paul Massey and convicted armed robber John Kinsella. The latest conviction places him among a small group of men in English criminal history to receive two whole-life terms, though the new sentence does not change his punishment.
Chilling Premonition Fulfilled
Years before the prison killing, Fellows boasted from behind bars that he could 'kill again' without facing extra time. That prediction came true when he, along with fellow lifers David Taylor, 64, and Lee Newell, 57, stabbed Kyle Bevan 25 times in his cell using makeshift weapons. The trio then placed Bevan in bed to make it appear he was sleeping, leaving his death undetected until the next morning. The motive remains unclear, but it is suspected Bevan was targeted because he had killed a child.
The Massey Murder: A Cold-Blooded Execution
On July 26, 2015, Fellows—dressed in combat gear and riding a mountain bike—lay in wait outside the Clifton home of Paul Massey. As Massey pulled into his driveway, Fellows shot him with an Uzi-style submachine gun. When Massey tried to flee, Fellows calmly followed and fired again. The killing went unsolved for three years, with detectives initially considering Fellows a low-level player. In reality, he was the go-to hitman for a rival gang known as the Anti A Team.
The Kinsella Hit: A Second Murder
On May 5, 2018, Fellows cycled up to John Kinsella and his pregnant partner Wendy Owen as they walked their dogs near Rainhill, Merseyside. Wearing a mask and high-vis jacket, he shot Kinsella twice in the back, then twice in the head at close range. Fellows then handed the gun to accomplice Steven Boyle and cycled away. Police arrested Fellows on his return from Amsterdam on May 30, 2018, after a Garmin GPS watch revealed reconnaissance missions before the Massey murder.
Prison Violence and a Third Killing
Despite being in maximum security, Fellows continued his violent streak. In 2019, he was slashed with a razor at Whitemoor prison, requiring an airlift to hospital. After being moved to HMP Wakefield, he was stabbed in the head and neck in another attack. Then, on November 4, 2023, he killed for a third time. The court heard that Fellows was known in prison as the 'Wakefield Dexter', after the TV vigilante serial killer. Judge Mrs Justice McGowan imposed a new life term, but as Fellows already has two whole-life orders, the sentence is symbolic.
Massey's former partner Louise Lydiate once said of Fellows: 'He's just so cold and there's no remorse or nothing.'
