Spanish Prosecutors Drop Julio Iglesias Sexual Assault Investigation Over Jurisdiction
Julio Iglesias Sexual Assault Case Dropped in Spain

Spanish state prosecutors have formally announced the closure of their preliminary investigation into sexual assault allegations against legendary singer Julio Iglesias, determining that Spain's National Court lacks jurisdiction over the case.

Jurisdictional Issues Halt Investigation

The decision comes after prosecutors initially opened an investigation earlier this month into claims that the 82-year-old Grammy-winning artist sexually assaulted two former employees at his residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. The jurisdictional question arose because the alleged incidents occurred outside Spanish territory.

Iglesias's Vehement Denial

Iglesias has consistently and categorically denied all allegations through social media statements. "With deep sorrow, I respond to the accusations made by two people who previously worked at my home," he wrote. "I deny having abused, coerced or disrespected any woman. These accusations are absolutely false and cause me great sadness."

Attempts to reach legal representatives for Iglesias through a Florida attorney listed on his website were not immediately successful at the time of reporting.

A Legendary Career Spanning Decades

Julio Iglesias remains one of the world's most successful recording artists since his 1969 debut album Yo Canto. With over 300 million records sold across more than a dozen languages, his career has achieved remarkable longevity and global reach.

International Success and Accolades

After establishing himself in Spain, Iglesias achieved immense popularity in the United States and worldwide during the 1970s and 1980s. His collaborations with prominent American artists including Willie Nelson and Diana Ross significantly contributed to his international breakthrough.

The singer's numerous accolades include a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance in 1988 for his album Un Hombre Solo, followed by a prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. Beyond his professional achievements, Iglesias is also known as the father of contemporary pop star Enrique Iglesias.

The closure of this investigation marks a significant development in a case that had attracted considerable international attention, though jurisdictional limitations have prevented Spanish authorities from pursuing the matter further.
